The Learn to Live School of Skills, which operates under the Salesian Institute Youth Projects, recently marked the formal handover of its newly constructed electrical workshop in Somerset Road, Green Point, Cape Town. This project was made possible through funding from the Turkish Co-operation and Co-ordination Agency (Tika) and is one of three inauguration programs organized by Tika this week, with a focus on empowering disadvantaged youth and women.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by Lindiwe Zulu, the Minister of Social Development, and Ayşegül Kandaş, the Turkish ambassador. The electrical workshop has been fully equipped with essential items such as air conditioners, work stations, vice-pedestals, chairs, tables, cabinets, and all other required electrical equipment.
Principal Tony Austen of the Learn to Live School of Skills reiterated the Salesian Institute’s commitment to providing a nurturing learning environment for young individuals, enabling them to develop the skills necessary to build their own future. The event was made more memorable with musical support from the school’s Marimba Band, underscoring the collaborative effort to foster skill development for South Africa’s future leaders and artisans.
Kandaş highlighted Tika’s previous achievement of completing 15 projects in various provinces, all aimed at enhancing the well-being and empowerment of local youth and women. The Turkish Embassy, through Tika projects, strives to support South African youth and women. Kandaş further emphasized the value of collaborating with the Department of Social Development on such initiatives. Supporting the Learn to Live School of Skills with an electrical workshop will contribute to the vocational training of the school’s young students.
Zulu expressed her appreciation for Tika’s assistance, recognizing that a tragic incident brought them together and sparked discussions on further collaboration. The minister recounted that when she mentioned the Salesian Institute, the ambassador promptly pledged support, illustrating the strong partnership formed.
